  • Japanese Name: シルバニアファミリー (Shirubania Famirī
  • Creator: Epoch
  • Total Number of Families: Currently 45+
  • Fun Fact: There are now thousands of Sylvanian characters!

WHAT ARE THE SYLVANIAN FAMILIES?

Okay, so on to the first part of our little journey to learn about the Sylvanian Families. What exactly are the Sylvanian Families, you ask? Well, these cuties are actually a line of kawaii anthropomorphic animal collectibles. That means that they act like people, dress up in homey outfits, and live in adorable dollhouses.

All of the animal characters in the Sylvanian Families live in Sylvania (シルバニア, Shirubania), a lovely little village set in the Great Nature. It’s a lovely countryside where everyone tries to get along with one another. In Sylvania, everyone dresses up in cute 1950s fashion, and adults work as doctors, carpenters, teachers, and other good jobs that help others.

Living in the countryside, the Sylvanian Families have large vacation homes that you can arrange and redecorate. These cuties also come with cozy stories where you learn more about the characters and how much they take care of each other and nature. Whether you’re a child or a kawaii collector, the Sylvanian Families were made for you to learn more about kindness and love!

WHERE ARE THE SYLVANIAN FAMILIES FROM?

The name Sylvanian Families might sound kind of European, but did you know that these cute collectibles actually come from Japan? These cutesy animal figures were released in 1985 by Epoch, a Japanese toy and gaming company known for its Aquabeads and Doraemon video games.

When Epoch created the Sylvanian Families, the company wanted to highlight important Japanese values like family, nature, and love. That’s why they created the Sylvanian Families with such care! Not only do they have such cute designs, but they’re also made with so much attention to detail, you can’t help but want one for your own kawaii Sylvanian Families collection

WHY ARE THEY CALLED SYLVANIAN FAMILIES?

That's a pretty good question that’s probably on everyone’s mind. After all, the name Sylvanian Families sounds a little bit too complicated for kawaii animal collectibles. But did you know that the original name for the brand was even more difficult than that?

Epoch originally released the cutesy animal family figures under the name Pleasant Friends of the Forest Epoch System Collection Animal Toy Sylvanian Families. That's "Mori no yukaina nakama-tachi Epokku-sha shisutemu korekushon animaru tōi shirubania famirī" (森のゆかいな仲間たち エポック社 システム・コレクション・アニマルトーイ・シルバニアファミリー) in Japanese. It was a handful, that's why the company ultimately decided to go with Sylvanian Families instead.

WHAT DOES SYLVANIAN MEAN?

A lot of fans might think that Sylvanian has something to do with a made-up European country, but that's actually not true! It turns out that Sylvanian means "of the forest." The name was derived from the Roman god, Silvanus! Epoch wanted to create a series of animal cuties focused on family and the love for nature, that is why they named the collectibles Sylvanian Families.

ARE CALICO CRITTERS AND SYLVANIAN FAMILIES THE SAME?

Calico Critters look like Sylvanian Families, they feel like Sylvanian Families, so they must be the same as Sylvanian Families, right? That’s correct! Calico Critters is actually just the Western name of the Sylvanian Families.

When Epoch decided to expand the market for the kawaii collectibles, they gave the toys to the company Tomy to distribute. Unfortunately, the company lost the rights to name Sylvanian Families in the US and the UK. That’s why they came up with the name Calico Critters instead!

WHY ARE THEY CALLED CALICO CRITTERS?

Originally, when Tomy brought the Sylvanian Families to Canada and the US they reintroduced the line under the full name Calico Critters of Cloverleaf Corners. However, the name was eventually simplified to Calico Critters so that it’d be easier for people to remember.

Now, you might be wondering why in the world Tomy decided to rename the Sylvanian Families as the Calico Critters. The name comes from the Calico cat, a cute little kitty with patchy fur of different colors and patterns. The word "Critters" was later added so the name would refer to "colorful animal friends." It's such a cute name, don't you think!

HOW TALL ARE THE SYLVANIAN FAMILIES?

The Sylvanian Families aren't all that very tall! These animal cuties are usually just a few centimeters in height. Though they don't all have the same proportions, the Sylvanian Families are just a few centimeters taller than one another. Parents are the tallest ones, then come the grandparents, then the older siblings, the brothers, sisters, toddlers, and the babies!

Since the Sylvanian Families are only a few centimeters tall, they fit perfectly in your pocket! You can put them on your desk or in the corner of your display cabinets. They make great additions to miniature collections. That's probably one of the reasons why Sylvanian Families are so popular!

WHY ARE SYLVANIAN FAMILIES SO EXPENSIVE?

Cuteness comes at a cost! The figures and dollhouses in the Sylvanian Families series can be a little heavy on the wallet and that's because of a number of reasons. First of all, is the quality! Epoch makes sure to use the best materials when making their Sylvanian figures. Not only that, but the attention to detail is striking! Fans love the detailed look and feel of all of the Sylvanian Families.

The third reason why Sylvanian Families can be a bit pricey is that Epoch doesn't really make that many of them. Quality materials can be expensive, and the production of these kawaii collectibles can take a bit of time. This makes Sylvanian Families a little bit rare and hard to find! That's why when you do manage to buy yourself a figure from the Sylvanian Families, you have to cherish it with all your heart.

HOW MANY SYLVANIAN FAMILIES ARE THERE?

There are a whole lot! On the official Japanese Sylvanian Families website, there are 45 families and 19 different friends, but Epoch has characters that aren’t really listed. The company hasn't really accounted for all of the old characters that it's produced in the past that have become discontinued.

That's not all! The Sylvanian Families has become an international brand, and some sets are only available in certain countries like Japan, Europe, and the USA. Epoch also adds new sets every year. That's why fans estimate that there could probably be more than 2250 individual characters in the Sylvanian Families!

LET'S MEET ALL THE SYLVANIAN FAMILIES

WHAT ARE THE MOST POPUlAR SYLVANIAN FAMILIES?

All of the Sylvanian Families are super cute, but some families are especially popular among fans. That includes the Chocolate Rabbit Family that is especially well known because of the Sylvanian Families TV show (yes, the Sylvanian Families has its own TV show! We'll talk more about that in a bit). Other popular families are the Walnut Squirrel Family, the Milk Rabbit Family, the Hedgehog Family, and the Bear Family.

WHY ARE THE SYLVANIAN FAMILIES POPULAR?

Well, for one thing, these flocked and furry animal cuties are just darn right cute. Not only that, but since they're made by the Japanese, Sylvanian Families come as high-quality collectibles. These two things made them especially popular in Japan when they were released in 1985, and eventually Epoch expanded the toyline around the world, where 70 other countries fell in love with the Sylvanians!

However, the Sylvanians eventually lost their popularity in the late 90s and early 2000s. Lately, though, there's been a major resurgence for the Sylvanian Families thanks to Gen Z's interest in cute and retro characters! Fans love the nostalgic appeal of the collectibles, and there's been a growing modern collector base all around the world!

LET'S WATCH THE SYLVANIAN FAMILIES ON TV!

Did you know that the Sylvanian Families was so popular that it got not just one, but a handful of anime series? In 1987, the toys got the “Sylvanian Families,” a cute Western cartoon. Then in 1988 it also got a British stop motion series called “Stories of the Sylvanian Families.”

The fun doesn't stop there! In 2015 and 2017, the Sylvanian Families got their own OVAs from the Shogukakan Music and Digital Entertainment. You can find them both on YouTube and Netflix! Then in 2017, the franchise got a 12-episode animated short series called “Sylvanian Families Mini Stories,” which was aired on TV Tokyo that very same year.

SYLVANIAN FAMILIES HEAD TO THE BIG SCREEN

The Sylvanian Families didn't just stop at television; they made their way to film too! In 2023, the franchise got a Japanese animated film called “Sylvanian Families the Movie: A Gift from Freya.” The film, which was directed by Kazuya Konaka, was based on the original storyline by Epoch.

The movie centers on the Chocolate Rabbit Family. It opens with the annual Festival of the Stars in the Sylvanian Village. Everyone in the village is nervous about the event. And Frey, the Chocolate Rabbit girl, is worrying about what to get her mom. It's a cute, wholesome movie that the entire family can enjoy!

PLAY SYLVANIAN GAMES

Is gaming more of your style? Well, you don't have to worry because the Sylvanian Families has a ton of games, all of which were produced by Epoch. Some of the most interesting games include “Sylvanian Families 4: Meguru Kisetsu no Tapestry” and “Sylvanian Families: Fashion Designer ni Naritai! Kurumi Risu no Onna no ko,” which you can find on Game Boy Advance.

THE SYLVANIAN FAMILIES GET A PARK!

If the Sylvanian figures are a little bit too small for your taste, you can find real-life-sized figures in the Sylvania Park in Sakai, Osaka. Getting there, you have to ride a Sylvanian train decked in Sylvanian Family decorations! Then, when you arrive, you'll find the park in the middle of the woods just like in Sylvania.

The park is super cute with life-sized versions of all the Sylvanian Families and their homes. They have figures made of the same flocky, fluffy material as the actual toys, but bigger! Even the food samples are made with careful attention to detail. It's the perfect place for a Sylvanian fan!

THE SYLVANIAN FAMILIES 40TH ANNIVERSARY

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2025, the Sylvanian Families hosted a special event called the Sylvanian Families Exhibition. Hosted in Sunshine City, the exhibition allowed fans to check out a special dioramas, archival displays, collaboration works by artists and students. The exhibit also offered original goods for fans to add to their collection!

The Sylvanian Families Exhibition also showcased a special restuarant collab with the Sunshine Sky Restaurant. After going through all the dioramas and displays at the exhibit, fans could visit the restuarant to nibble on limited-edition meals. They were all tasty and super cute!

CHILL OUT AT THE SYLVANIAN CAFE

From time to time, the Sylvanian Families get the cutest pop-up cafes. In 2022, the franchise had the Yumeiro Mermaid Cafe in Osaka Shinsaibashi. The pop-up cafe featured the cutest Sylvanian-themed meals like the "Wizard Pancakes," "Clem's Wizard Curry," and the “Sandwich Plate." It also had special mermaid Sylvanian drinks and a cute parfait.

To celebrate the Sylvanian Families' 40th anniversary in 2025, the franchise hosted a special collaboration cafe with Cafe Fan Base called the "Sylvanian Families Fairy Cafe." The pop-up menu included 10 special dishes that were decorated to look like fairy food from the Sylvanian Families! Fans would also get one collectible coaster for each food, dessert, or drinks that they would order.
