If you’ve spent any amount of time on the internet, there’s a very good chance you’ve met Pusheen.

Maybe you first saw her curled up in an animated GIF. Maybe she appeared in your messages as a sticker holding a slice of pizza. Or maybe you spotted a ridiculously squishy Pusheen plushie and immediately decided that yes, this cat absolutely needed to live on your bed with the rest of your plushie collection.

Pusheen has been making the internet a little cuter since 2010, but there’s much more to this famous feline than naps and snacks. She has siblings, best friends, hobbies, multiple fantastical alter egos, and, somehow, all nine of her lives still intact.

Who Is Pusheen?

According to her official profile, Pusheenm is a sweet, curious, lazy, and plump tabby cat who loves going on adventures. Of course, this is Pusheen we're talking about, so those adventures are often accompanied by plenty of snacks and followed by a well-earned nap.

Her birthday is February 18, and she still has all nine lives.  Her official "best feature" might be our favorite piece of Pusheen lore: her toes look like beans!

Her favorite activities include blogging, snacking, and sleeping, but she isn't simply a lazy cat who spends all day doing nothing. Pusheen is constantly trying new things. She ate, slept, baked, celebrated holidays, procrastinated, tried new hobbies, and occasionally behaved like a tiny furry disaster.

In other words, she was basically all of us, just significantly rounder!

What Does Pusheen Look Like?

Pusheen's appearance is just as uncomplicated as her favorite pastimes. She has a rounded gray body, darker gray stripes, a striped tail, tiny paws, and a minimalist face that's instantly recognizable.

She doesn't need elaborate outfits or enormous sparkly eyes to be cute. Then again, when Pusheen does dress up or transform into something else, things can get wonderfully weird. We'll get to that soon!

Was Pusheen Inspired by a Real Cat?

Yes! The character Pusheen was inspired by a real gray tabby cat from Claire Belton's life.

Her unusual name has an equally charming story. Pusheen comes from the Irish word puisín, meaning "kitten." So while "Pusheen" sounds perfectly suited to an imaginary marshmallow-shaped cat, the name actually has real linguistic roots.

Of course, the fictional Pusheen has grown far beyond her real-life inspiration. Today's Pusheen has an entire circle of family and friends and lives in a universe where turning into a mermaid, dinosaur, or unicorn is apparently a perfectly reasonable way to spend an afternoon.

Where Did Pusheen Come From?

Before she appeared on plushies, mugs, stationery, and millions of phones, Pusheen was an internet comic character. She made her online debut in 2010 in a series of comics created by Claire Belton and written together with Andrew Duff for their project Everyday Cute.

The little gray tabby quickly became the breakout star, eventually leading to the original Pusheen.com Tumblr blog, where comics and animated GIFs featuring Pusheen began spreading across the internet.

The timing couldn't have been better. Tumblr was booming, reaction GIFs were becoming their own form of communication, and funny internet cats were practically celebrities. According to Pusheen's official history, the comics and GIFs soon became a viral sensation and were being shared hundreds of thousands of times each week.

How Did Pusheen Become so Famous?

Pusheen's Tumblr popularity was only the beginning. A huge moment came in 2013, when Facebook introduced licensed Pusheen stickers for its chat feature. Suddenly, millions of people could use Pusheen to express exactly how they were feeling without typing a word. Hungry? There was a Pusheen for that. Celebrating? Pusheen could handle it. Too tired to form a coherent response to your friend's message? She had you covered there too.

That same year, Claire Belton published “I Am Pusheen the Cat,” a collection of Pusheen comics that would eventually be translated into more than a dozen languages.

Pusheen then expanded far beyond the screen. According to the official Pusheen site, merchandise featuring the famous feline is now available in more than 60 countries, while Pusheen Corp. works with more than 100 licensees around the world.

And those little GIFs and stickers? The official site estimates that Pusheen images and GIFs have been sent between people more than 20 billion times. Not bad for a cat with very tiny legs!

Get to Know Pusheen’s Many Alter Egos

Apparently, being an internationally famous tabby isn't exciting enough because Pusheen has transformed into an impressive assortment of fantastical creatures over the years.

There's Pusheenicorn, a magical combination of Pusheen and a unicorn, as well as the winged Super Pusheenicorn. Mermaid Pusheen takes her adventures underwater, while Pusheenosaurus imagines what everyone's favorite chubby tabby might have looked like in prehistoric times.

She's also transformed into Dragonsheen, and there's even Pugsheen, a pug version of Pusheen said to exist somewhere in a parallel universe. Then we have the pastel Alien Pusheens, because apparently even outer space isn't beyond Pusheen's reach.

The transformations are part of what makes collecting Pusheen goodies so much fun! You never quite know which version of her will turn up next.

Pusheen isn't the only adorable face in her universe. She has a whole group of siblings and friends with personalities that are just as quirky as hers!

Stormy

Stormy is Pusheen's fluffy little sister and best friend. She's adventurous, intellectual, loves exploring and learning, and tries to set a good example for their younger brother.

Pip

Pusheen’s younger brother, Pip, is a dark gray kitten who is fearless, curious, and occasionally troublesome. Pip follows his sisters around and dreams of becoming a wolf when he grows up. Aim high, Pip!

Sloth

Next is Sloth, Pusheen's calm and thoughtful friend who enjoys yoga, looking out windows, and hanging around with Pusheen. He takes his time doing all things, and he’s always there to support his loved ones.

Bo

Bo is a little blue parakeet who dreams of becoming a world-renowned interior designer. Her hobbies include decorating dollhouses and finding her soulmate!

Cheek

Last but not least is Cheek, a tiny yellow hamster with a rosy blush. He likes baking in his miniature kitchen, and then he shares his baked treats with his friends.

Why Does Pusheen Fit So Well Into Kawaii Culture?

Here's something that occasionally surprises new fans: Pusheen isn't Japanese. She was actually created in the United States. But why is Pusheen associated with Japan’s kawaii culture?

Well, for starters, Pusheen is definitely super cute. Now put a cute character on an ordinary notebook and suddenly it isn't just a notebook anymore. It's the notebook you need. Pusheen’s Cutest Collaborations

Pusheen has made some pretty famous friends over the years, with collaborations that have taken her into the worlds of kawaii characters, music, and gaming.

In 2021, Hello Kitty x Pusheen brought two major icons of cuteness together for a collection featuring plushies, stationery, accessories, apparel, and more. A year later, Pusheen entered the world of virtual pop with Hatsune Miku x Pusheen, which included original animated LINE stickers and exclusive merchandise featuring the pair.

More than 15 years after her online debut, Pusheen is still going strong. Internet trends may come and go, but apparently our love for a chubby gray cat who would rather be eating snacks isn't going anywhere.
