White, fluffy, and always ready for a little mischief, Korilakkuma is one of the cutest bear characters in the Rilakkuma world. You might recognize her for her white fur, pink ears, and little red button. But how much do you actually know about Korilakkuma?

Unlike some kawaii characters with detailed backstories, Korilakkuma is still a bit of a mystery. We don't even know exactly where she came from! What we do know is that this little bear has plenty of personality, and we’re about to discover it. Ready? Let’s get to know Korilakkuma!

Who Is Korilakkuma?

Korilakkuma is a character from the Rilakkuma series by the Japanese character company San-X. Her name is written コリラックマ in Japanese and pronounced “Korirakkuma.”

She first appeared in August 2004, about a year after Rilakkuma debuted. According to San-X, this mysterious little white bear simply appeared from nowhere one day. She didn't seem to know Rilakkuma beforehand, either! It was actually Kiiroitori, the hardworking yellow bird of the group, who gave her the name Korilakkuma.

More than 20 years later, she's become a kawaii icon in her own right.

Is Korilakkuma Really a Bear?

Well, Korilakkuma looks like a bear, and the official San-X website describes her as a “white bear cub,” but there’s one suspicious detail: the red button on her chest.

San-X says this button suggests that Korilakkuma may not be a real bear after all. And if you're familiar with Rilakkuma, that probably sounds familiar. Rilakkuma has a zipper on his back and is officially described as a bear in costume. (Check out our Rilakkuma blog to learn more about this story.)

So what's underneath Korilakkuma's fluffy white exterior? Nobody knows! San-X has never revealed her true identity, making it one of the cutest mysteries in the Rilakkuma world.

What Is Korilakkuma Like?

Don't let that innocent face fool you. Korilakkuma is energetic, playful, and very mischievous. She loves playing and pulling pranks, with poor Kiiroitori often finding himself on the receiving end of her antics.

Her personality is also a fun contrast to Rilakkuma. While Rilakkuma would happily spend the day lounging around, eating his favorite foods, and taking it easy, Korilakkuma is much more likely to be getting into trouble somewhere nearby.

Basically, she's tiny chaos wrapped in fluffy white fur.

Korilakkuma Loves Strawberries!

If you've seen Korilakkuma surrounded by strawberries on plushies, stationery, and other kawaii goodies, there's a reason for that. She absolutely loves strawberries! We can even say she’s obsessed with them. In fact, Korilakkuma has a special talent for recognizing which strawberries are sweet just by looking at them.

Her love for strawberries even landed her a real-world role as a “Tochigi Strawberry Ambassador” in Japan! And in 2026, Korilakkuma celebrated her 10th consecutive year in the role with a special strawberry-covered plushie.

So, all those strawberry-themed Korilakkuma goodies? They're very on-brand.

Who Are Korilakkuma's Friends?

Korilakkuma might have mysteriously appeared on her own, but she's now surrounded by a very cute group of friends. There's Rilakkuma, the relaxed brown bear in costume who takes life at his own pace. Then there's Kiiroitori, the responsible yellow bird who tries to keep everyone in line while regularly dealing with Korilakkuma's pranks.

Korilakkuma is also good friends with Chairoikoguma, a real brown bear who lives in the Honey Forest. Yes, San-X specifically calls Chairoikoguma a “real” bear. Which only makes us more curious about what Korilakkuma and Rilakkuma actually are!

Together, the characters have starred in countless cute themes, illustrations, stories, plushies, and collectibles over the years.

Korilakkuma Got a Whole 20th Anniversary Celebration!

Korilakkuma may have started as a side character in Rilakkuma's world, but she's definitely become a little star of her own!

When she celebrated her 20th anniversary in 2024, Korilakkuma got the full kawaii treatment. She went on her very own “Korilakkuma's Wakuwaku Trip,” a special anniversary event that traveled around Japan. Fans could enjoy Korilakkuma displays, look back at her different designs through the years, take photos, and shop for exclusive goodies.

There was also a special Korilakkuma 20th Anniversary Cafe in Tokyo filled with strawberry-inspired dishes and desserts, plus special Korilakkuma merchandise and anniversary goodies.

Even some Rilakkuma cafes and hot spring shops temporarily transformed into Korilakkuma-themed versions for the celebration. Not bad for a little white bear who mysteriously showed up one day!

A New Korilakkuma Pop-Up Is Coming in 2026!

And the Korilakkuma fun isn't slowing down. A new Korilakkuma Usagi Pop-up Shop is coming to Japan in autumn 2026! The pop-up kicks off at Lumine Est Shinjuku in Tokyo from October 1 to 14, 2026, with an Osaka event also planned.

This time, it's all about Korilakkuma Usagi. Fans can expect an extra-fluffy Korilakkuma dressed in adorable bunny ears, along with special Korilakkuma plushies, pouches, accessories, stickers, towels, and other exclusive goodies. There will even be limited-edition colors for each venue!
