WHAT IS OJAMAJO DOREMI?
Ojamajo Doremi is an anime that tells the story of Doremi Harukaze, a 3rd grader who calls herself "the unluckiest pretty girl in the world." One day, she discovers a shop called the Maho-dou, owned by a witch, and this starts her “accidental” magical journey. Made by Japanese studio Toei Animation in 1999, this anime is all about learning spells and having adventures with friends!
WHAT DOES OJAMAJO DOREMI MEAN?
Ojamajo Doremi means "Bothersome Witch Doremi" in Japanese! The word “ojamajo” is a mix of "ojama," which means "bothersome" or "troublemaker," and "majo," which means "witch." So, Doremi is a little bit of a troublemaker witch! It’s a fun name that fits her magical and sometimes clumsy personality.
OJAMAJO DOREMI OR MAGICAL DOREMI?
You’ve probably heard of Magical DoReMi and wondered if it’s the same as Ojamajo Doremi. Well, yes! They’re the same show, just with different names. The original Japanese name is Ojamajo Doremi, but when the show was brought to North America, it was called Magical DoReMi. The story and characters are the same in both versions, so fans can enjoy Doremi’s magical adventures no matter which name they know!
WHEN WAS OJAMAJO DOREMI RELEASED?
Ojamajo Doremi has been around for quite a while! The first series debuted way back in 1999, after the success of magical girl animes like Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura. It was Toei Animation’s first magical girl story in about 15 years, and it quickly became a big hit. They even created a movie that came out during the broadcast of the first series! After the first show came other series, spinoffs, and even a collection of cute Ojamajo Doremi merch.
OJAMAJO DOREMI ANIME SERIES
Since the first season of Ojamajo Doremi was a hit, Toei Animation decided to continue the series. That said, the company produced other main shows following the original. Let’s take a look at all the Ojamajo Doremi seasons!
Ojamajo Doremi
The original Ojamajo Doremi series, which fans refer to as “Mujirushi” or unbranded, is all about Doremi Harukaze, a third grader who becomes a witch apprentice. The show is set in the charming town of Misora and revolves around Doremi and her friends. The girls train to become witches, learn fun spells, and face challenges. Along the way, the series introduces new characters like Doremi’s little sister Pop, and a rival witch apprentice, Onpu.
Ojamajo Doremi # (Sharp)
Following the first series' success, “Ojamajo Doremi #” aired from 2000 to 2001. This time, Doremi and her friends are back as witch apprentices and are given a big task: take care of a baby witch named Hana-chan! Even though they have magical powers, they try their best to raise her without too much magic. It’s a story about friendship, love, and growing up.
More! Ojamajo Doremi
This third series is all about growing up and making sweet treats! Doremi and her friends are in fifth grade, and they meet a new friend named Momoko from overseas. The Maho-dou shop changes into a sweets shop, and the girls wear cute pastry chef uniforms as they try to impress the witch elders with their magical desserts.
Ojamajo Doremi Dokkaan!
The fourth and final TV anime series, Ojamajo Doremi Dokkaan! shows Doremi and her friends in sixth grade and graduating. They help Hana-chan train to become a witch, all while trying to solve the mystery of a sad queen trapped by “thorns of sorrow.” Even though there are tough challenges and new lessons to learn, Doremi and her friends stick together to help both the human and witch worlds. In the end, they face their biggest choice yet—whether to stay as witches or live normal lives.
Ojamajo Doremi Naisho
The main Ojamajo Doremi TV series ended with the fourth season because the creators had planned to tell Doremi’s story all the way to graduation. They also worried that if the series went on, the characters would look too tall! But they weren’t done with the magical fun yet, so they made this special spinoff series. It only has 13 episodes, with the story focusing on Doremi’s little secrets during her fifth year of elementary school.
Ojamajo Doremi Comedy Theater
Showing chibi versions of the characters, this spinoff series was released on Toei Animation’s YouTube channel in 2019. There were 26 short episodes packed with silly situations, playful jokes, and lighthearted magic! This hilarious series is still available to watch online so you can check it out for a quick giggle!
HOW MANY EPISODES ARE THERE OF OJAMAJO DOREMI?
The main Ojamajo Doremi series has a total of 201 episodes across its four different seasons! Each series brings new adventures, magic, and friendship, making it a wonderful journey for fans! Plus, there are some special episodes in the spin-offs, but these usually only have less than 20 episodes.
IS MAGICAL DOREMI DARK?
The English version of Ojamajo Doremi isn’t a dark show, but it has some serious and touching moments! It’s mostly lighthearted and funny, following Doremi and her friends learning magic, facing challenges, and helping others. While the show deals with friendship problems and growing up, it’s actually an anime fit for kawaii fans!
WHY DID MAGICAL DOREMI GET CANCELED?
Well, Magical Doremi or Ojamajo Doremi didn’t really get canceled! It actually wrapped up nicely after its fourth season. The creators felt it was the perfect time to end the story because Doremi and her friends were getting ready to graduate from elementary school. They didn’t want the characters to grow too much older or the story to drag on for too long. So, they decided to end it while keeping the magic and fun of the series just right!
HOW DID OJAMAJO DOREMI END?
Ojamajo Doremi ended with a heartwarming story about friendship and growing up. In the final series, Ojamajo Doremi Dokkaan!, they must help Hana-chan become a witch again after she loses her powers. While doing this, they also work together to heal the "thorns of sorrow" that were causing sadness in the witch and human worlds.
After overcoming these struggles, Doremi and her friends have to make a big decision. Even though they love being witches, they choose to give up their magic and live normal lives so they can stay connected to both worlds. The series ends with Doremi and her friends graduating from elementary school and looking forward to the future.

From the clumsy and cheerful Doremi to her loyal friends, this team of young witches-in-training is full of surprises!
Doremi Harukaze (春風どれみ)
The main protagonist of the series, Doremi has red hair in a bun and enjoys steak. She’s a lively, kind-hearted girl who’s always there for her friends. Sometimes, though, she’s clumsy and thinks she’s the “most unfortunate girl in the whole world.” But as she trains to become a witch, she learns that courage comes from the heart, not spells. Doremi’s theme color is pink, and every time she turns into her witch apprentice form, she chants her “Pirika Pirilala Popolina Peperuto” spell!
Hazuki Fujiwara (藤原はづき)
Hazuki is Doremi's best friend, a sweet and shy girl with brown hair. She comes from a rich family. Hazuki loves playing the violin and dreams of becoming a great violinist. She used to have trouble expressing her feelings, but with her friends’ support, she found the courage to speak up. Hazuki’s “Paipai Ponpoi Puwapuwa Puu” spell transforms her into her orange-themed magical form.
Aiko Senoo (妹尾あいこ)
Aiko is a girl with short blue hair who is super outgoing and sporty. She’s a transfer student from Osaka, so you can hear her speak in an Osaka dialect. She lives with her dad since her parents are divorced, but she cares about both of them deeply. Thanks to her and her friends’ efforts, her parents got back together! Her theme color is blue, and when she says "Pameruku Raruku Laliloli Poppun," she changes into her witch-apprentice form.
Pop Harukaze (春風ぽっぷ)
Doremi’s little sister, Pop, is super smart and responsible for her age! Pop finds out about Doremi’s magic by accident, and she becomes a witch apprentice too! She’s more mature than her older sister, but she still loves to have fun. Her witch transformation spell is "Pipito Purito Puritan Peperuto," and her theme color is red.
Onpu Segawa (瀬川おんぷ)
A popular child idol, Onpu is a bit distant at first and uses forbidden magic to change other people’s feelings. But spending time with the others helps her become kinder and more open. Onpu works hard in both her acting career and witch training, and she’s super talented at playing the flute! She wears purple, and she chants her iconic "Pururun Purun Famifami Faa” spell to transform into a witch-apprentice.
Momoko Asuka (飛鳥ももこ)
This Japanese-American girl transferred from New York to join Doremi and her friends. At first, she only speaks English and finds it hard to fit in, but she learns Japanese with the help of her new friends. Momoko is really good at baking and dreams of opening a pastry shop someday. She’s sweet and straightforward, and her transformation spell is “Perutan Petton Pararira Pon.” Her theme color is yellow, and she brings lots of sunshine to the group with her bright personality!
Hana-chan (ハナちゃん)
Born from a magical rose, Hana is a baby witch destined to be the next queen. Doremi and her friends care for her, taking on the role of her mothers. Although she’s just a baby, Hana has strong magic powers. Later, she turns herself into an 11-year-old so she can go to school with her friends. Because of this change, Hana becomes a witch apprentice and joins the group on their magical adventures! Her transformation spell is “Pororin Pyuarin Hanahana Pii.”
Majo Rika (マジョリカ)
This witch owns the Maho-dou magic shop. When Doremi discovers her secret, Majo Rika turns into a little witch frog! To break the curse, she becomes Doremi and her friends' magic teacher, guiding them as apprentice witches. Although she starts off strict and a bit grumpy towards humans, she slowly warms up and cares deeply for Doremi and the others.
Lala (ララ)
Lala is Majorica’s fairy helper. She can look like a human fairy, but when others are around, she transforms into a cat. Lala is like a big sister to Doremi and her friends, always there to support them. She’s also the one who can calm down the grumpy Majorica when things get tough!
Queen of the Witch World (まじょかいのじょおう)
Kind and lovely, this queen looks after all the witches. She wears a veil that keeps her face a secret, adding to her mystery. But in the fourth season, her real identity is finally revealed!
Kotake Tetsuya (こたけてつや)
Kotake Tetsuya is a classmate and longtime sorta-friend of Doremi's. He's usually nice and popular with everyone, but he loves to tease Doremi and calls her “Dojimi.” Kotake is into soccer and plays on the school team, often hanging out with his classmates.
ARE MAGICAL DOREMI CHARACTERS THE SAME?
Well, yes! Since Magical DoReMi is the same version with just an alternate English title as Ojamajo Doremi, you can expect the same characters and story. However, the Japanese names were changed to Western ones. Doremi is Dorie, Hazuki is Reanne, and Aiko is Mirabelle.
WHO IS DOREMI’S BOYFRIEND?
Doremi doesn’t actually have a boyfriend, but she does have a bit of a love-hate friendship with Kotake! Even though Kotake teases her, they’re close in their own funny way. Doremi sometimes gets shy around him, and it’s easy to see they both care about each other deep down. Fans like to imagine them as a future couple, and they did have their sweet moments in the Ojamajo Doremi light novel!
WHY DID KOTAKE REJECT DOREMI?
Kotake didn’t actually reject Doremi! In the first episode of Doremi 16, Doremi confesses her feelings to Kotake when they are in eighth grade. However, Kotake didn’t reply right away, and Doremi, being dramatic, thought he didn’t like her back. She even cut her hair to show that she’s moving on!
But, with some encouragement from her friends Hazuki and Aiko, Doremi realized she might have misunderstood. Later, Kotake told her he hadn’t had time to reply and asked her to wait a little longer. This helped Doremi see that she could take things slow, and she stayed hopeful for his answer at the national soccer championships.
WHO DID DOREMI END UP WITH?
It seems romance isn’t really the focus of the anime series, as Doremi didn’t end up with anyone. Instead, the show celebrated her fun personality, strong bonds with her friends, and all the magical mishaps she got into. She did have her share of cute crushes like Kotake and a side character named Igarashe, but the show didn’t dive deep into those moments. It’s all about Doremi learning how to believe in herself!
